Sinusitis
Sinusitis is the inflammation of the mucosa of the nose and sinuses, leading to the accumulation of mucus and
the subsequent sensation of congestion.
if symptoms persist or increase after 5 days, we talk about Acute Sinusitis, which can last up to 12 weeks, whereas with Chronic Sinusitis symptoms last for more than 12 weeks. Sinusitis is mainly of viral origin, and at least 30% of the population suffers from rhinosinusitis once a year.
The main symptoms are:
- Facial pain or pressure
- Nasal congestion
- Rinorrhea or nasal secretion
- Nasal blockage
- Reduction or loss of sense of smell
Other symptoms can be: headache, fever, yellowish mucus...
Sinusitis Facts:
- Sinusitis is one of the most common disease conditions.
- It has been estimated that an adult suffers from 2 to 5 episodes of Acute viral Sinusitis per year.
- The lifetime prevalence of Chronic Rhinosinusitis is approximately 15%.
- Patients with Sinusitis demonstrated disease burden levels similar to chronic conditions such as chronic bronchitis, asthma or peptic ulcer.
